What to do in Cradle Mountain

With breathtaking views penetrating from every angle, taking advantage of Cradle Mountain’s landscape is an adventure every visitor should consider pursuing.

If you’re a natural born wanderer and want to explore at your own pace, there are multiple self-guided walking tracks that all boast scenic rainforest vistas and awe inspiring waterfalls.

For an easy and steady stroll along the banks of the Pencil Pine River, The Enchanted Stroll whirls through mossy myrtle rain forests and occasionally provides glimpses of animals in their natural habitats.

For a more advanced hike, The Waterfalls Walk that continues through to the challenging terrain of the Dove Canyon Track rewards with views of cascading waterfalls and the striking junction of the Pencil Pine River and Dove River.

Alternatively, if you’re an adventure seeker looking for an all-day affair with the great outdoors, the three hour walk to Crater Lake offers a view of a hidden glacial lake that’s hugged by 200 meter cliffs. For the same walking time with degrees of steep climbs, Marions Lookout shines bright on a clear day, displaying exceptional sights of Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake.

Intimate encounters with Tasmanian devils are offered at Tasmania’s premier Devil Sanctuary, Devils@Cradle. The experience starts with an up close and personal with the local wildlife and is completed with light refreshments of lodge made canapés and beverages. At the conclusion of your time at the sanctuary, a two course dinner at either Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge’s relaxed Tavern Bar or Bistro or the cosy Highland Restaurant awaits.

To get more of a thorough background on Cradle Mountain, the Park Explorer Drive Tour covers Dove Lake and Cradle Mountain’s hidden secrets. The one and a half hour guided tour connects with the environment on a deeper level, with the tour guides pointing out the history and specifics of the land along the way. Concluding with a short walk along the ancient forests, the Park Explorer Drive Tour gets visitors amongst the fauna and flora.

For a change of pace, active tours such as the three and a half hour Dove Lake Canoe Tour or Cradle Country’s horseback riding and quad biking adventures give the option to explore the surrounds in style. The canoe tour and the half, full or multi-day horseback riding alternative also provide light refreshment as part of the package.

Seasonal Activities

If you’re ready to make the most of your stay, there are numerous seasonal dependent tours that will guide you through the major attractions Cradle Mountain has to offer.
